Why Currents?
Our title means many things
Invisible forces running through water. Electricity running through wires. The many wireless signals in the air all around us. And all the things (“current events”) that are happening right now.

“Currents” was also the title of a publication series we did some years ago. There was no Web when we started it. Very few of our subscribers even had email. Today we have better ways to share our thoughts and news. But in casting about for a newsletter title, nothing sounded better than our own legacy, so “Currents” is back.

And there’s one other reason: Mark Twain.

The passenger who could not read it was charmed with a peculiar sort of faint dimple on [the river’s] surface, but to the pilot that was an italicized passage ... for it meant that a wreck or rock was buried there that could tear the life out of the strongest vessel that ever floated. In truth, the passengers who could not read this book saw nothing but pretty pictures in it, whereas to the trained eye these were not pictures at all, but the most earnest of reading matter.

Wireless Sensing and Connectivity Alone Do Not Make a Connected Business
We’ve been saying for a long time that the real Pervasive Internet “action” will be in business ecosystems, not in technology per se. At the end of the day, this is just another way of putting a time-honored business truth: Serious success requires not just “understanding” your customers’ problems, but making the decision to own those problems yourself, and to guarantee rock-solid, fiscally sound solutions.

For suppliers of M2M enabling technologies, this means grasping the connected-economy opportunities of potential adopters (often before the adopters fully grasp them), and then partnering with other suppliers—and even with the adopters themselves—to design and implement those solutions.

For M2M adopters, it means understanding that galaxies of device-generated data will be among the most valuable assets of the 21st century connected enterprise. Living, real-time information about the status of products and devices in the field—along with, in many cases, the ability to control and update those devices remotely—will allow manufacturers to define entirely new business models, new services offerings, and new customer relationships. And ownership of the data will allow adopter companies to forge data-driven partnerships and shape entire ecosystems to meet the new needs of those new customer relationships.

Because the broad spectrum of Pervasive Internet business opportunities is often difficult to grasp, even for technologists, the emergence of these ecosystems has been slow in coming. But we’ve also been saying for a long time that an explosion of M2M activity would begin to occur by the middle of this decade, and that prediction is now clearly coming true.

A couple of announcements made just this week demonstrate the necessary maturation of alliance-thinking in the Pervasive Internet/M2M arena.

Chipcon Acquires Figure 8 Wireless
Chipcon AS, the Oslo, Norway-based manufacturer of RF integrated circuits for low-power wireless devices, announced this week that it has acquired San Diego, CA-based Figure 8 Wireless in an all-stock transaction. This deal is a notable event in the world of ZigBee™—the low-power wireless networking standard that does for embedded devices what its cousin Wi-Fi does for laptops and handheld computing. (See our previous issue of Currents, “ZigBee™: The Wireless Device Networking Enabler Arrives.”)

Until recently, ZigBee™ players have been scattered across the landscape, and have often lacked clear value propositions for targeted customers. Potential adopters saw a fragmented and confusing vendor picture, not the unified solutions-provider picture they wanted to see.

In this week’s deal, Chipcon brings the physical radio component, Figure 8 brings the embedded software and development tools, and the fit is obvious. The merger is not the first attempt to provide an end-to-end platform for “one-stop” ZigBee™ solutions. But it is certainly an early example of that kind of activity, and represents another step in the necessary evolution of supplier ecosystems.

The union points to the recognition that M2M adopters need vendors who can provide much more than disparate elements of enablement. Complete solutions allow adopters to move new initiatives to the market faster and more effectively. M2M customers are waking up to the fact that mere enablement is only the beginning of Pervasive Internet applications and opportunities. In many cases, they have woken up to this fact before suppliers have.

In the ZigBee™ world (and beyond), the Chipcon/Figure 8 deal will raise the pressure on other players to match the move, or at the very least to become much more deliberate about defining and communicating their value propositions and strategies for execution. Wireless sensing and connectivity alone do not make a connected business.

Comtech and Camelot
On a related note, a recent pilot project announcement by UK-based Comtech unites not only M2M hardware and software players, but a major wireless carrier as well.

Comtech is an M2M solutions provider focused on remote monitoring and control of equipment over the Internet. The client in this instance is Camelot, operator of the UK National Lottery, for whom Comtech is testing wireless displays at lottery ticket outlets. UK’s Orange is the signal carrier for the pilot, and the displays themselves incorporate M2M technology from Sony Ericsson.

Camelot has launched a new “EuroMillions” game that offers rolling jackpots with potentially huge prize amounts. The problem is that the fast game has made it difficult to communicate accurate prizes because turn-around times are often too brief to permit printing of the jackpot amounts on paper for display in the stores.

Comtech’s rapidly updating electronic displays are designed to solve that problem, and also to raise customer awareness of “EuroMillions” as a new, fast-moving rolling jackpot gaming opportunity.

It was nearly a year ago now that we devoted an issue of Currents to the fact that the beleaguered core network providers and carriers seemed strangely blind to the extraordinary Pervasive Internet / M2M opportunities that could pull them out of their debt-induced doldroms (“Who Will Be the Device ISPs?”).

Since then, there have been only sporadic signs of M2M awareness in an otherwise handset-obsessed carrier world.

The Comtech announcement seems to confirm an intuition we’ve had for a while: Those who “own the wire” (or a piece of wireless spectrum) will need “guide dogs” to lead them to the rich opportunities of the Pervasive Internet. Emerging M2M solutions providers like Comtech will fill that role.

Happily, each such announcement inches telcos, wireless carriers, and core network providers that much closer to a “device data” orientation, rather than the purely “handset” or “PC” orientation of their past. With the dramatically heightened M2M activity we’re now seeing everywhere, we predict increasingly frequent news of carrier partnership in pervasive deployments.

Pervasive Internet Study
