Device Networking Hierarchy

Why Currents?
Our title means many things
Invisible forces running through water. Electricity running through wires. The many wireless signals in the air all around us. And all the things (“current events”) that are happening right now.

“Currents” was also the title of a publication series we did some years ago. There was no Web when we started it. Very few of our subscribers even had email. Today we have better ways to share our thoughts and news. But in casting about for a newsletter title, nothing sounded better than our own legacy, so “Currents” is back.

And there’s one other reason: Mark Twain.

The passenger who could not read it was charmed with a peculiar sort of faint dimple on [the river’s] surface, but to the pilot that was an italicized passage ... for it meant that a wreck or rock was buried there that could tear the life out of the strongest vessel that ever floated. In truth, the passengers who could not read this book saw nothing but pretty pictures in it, whereas to the trained eye these were not pictures at all, but the most earnest of reading matter.

Industrial Venue Progress in the Pervasive Internet

Industrial is among the most attractive yet least-understood venues in the Pervasive Internet landscape. Industrial adopters are increasingly convinced of M2M benefits, but they are also risk-averse and highly sensitive to implementation costs and ROI.

Further, new technologies bring suppliers unfamiliar with Industrial’s history and requirements.

Culture Clash: Industrial’s Past Meets Its Future
The industrial venue is among the most attractive yet least-understood venue in the Pervasive Internet landscape. As new technologies—such as wireless mesh networking—emerge in the Industrial space, they bring with them many suppliers unfamiliar with the venue’s IT history, behavior, and unique requirements. This often provokes considerable confusion—largely a clash of cultures between legacy adoption behavior and the promise of new technology.

If you think of the Pervasive Internet landscape as a community and the Industrial venue as a neighborhood, the buying habits, application deployment behaviors, and overall “customs” of the folks who live in the Industrial neighborhood can appear quite odd and arcane to an outsider.

industrial is Intense and Mission-Critical
These customs are the historical result of the demands of deploying and supporting mission-critical processes, the scale of Industrial asset intensity, and the near-obsessive operations-driven focus inherent in the Industrial world.

The Industrial market remains highly fragmented. Although industrial and manufacturing companies continually seek more efficient processes to provide goods and services, they do so idiosyncratically. From an Industrial customer’s perspective, more information and predictability is always desirable—whether it’s about receiving a customized order, or a shipment of mass-produced product.

Industrial customers are cautious adopters of pervasive technologies, being driven largely by implementation costs and ROI. The benefits of IP networking have now become very clear, and this—combined with an increasing number of industry-specific information standards, such as PackML for the packaging industry—have accelerated the pace of adoption.

Additionally, crossover from other venues is likely. RFID activity in the Retail venue, for example, will likely accelerate the development of information standards and their impact on the Industrial space.

Pervasive Technologies offer What the Industrial Adopter Wants
Overall, Pervasive Internet and M2M technologies provide an opportunity to more effectively coordinate control and information-sharing among operators, machines, process equipment, materials, and facilities.

In many applications, M2M-driven automation will be an enhancement of existing/legacy networks and processes. Pervasive will augment a vast number of mission-critical applications via functions like prognostics and tracking/location. These “augmenting” functions create a vast opportunity in the Industrial markets for optimization (see exhibit “Industrial Venue Opportunities”).

While some progress has been made, there is still a need to improve interoperability among product solutions and their integration into the operations of end-users. Systems integrators are focusing on specific markets and taking responsibility for an “end-to-end” solution.

The use of Pervasive Internet technologies enables better remote diagnostics, upgradeability, and real-time problem notification. In many industrial applications, wireless sensors and networks offer promise of minimal installation cost and extreme flexibility. At the same time, network robustness and battery life for difficult-to-reach wireless products continue to be critical concerns.

Supercharging Value and Profitability with Services
In Industrial markets, product value relates to the functions those products serve in their end-use markets. Internet-connected devices enable companies to deliver value-added services. Many companies have realized that for every dollar of goods sold, there can be anywhere from $5 to $20 of associated services and follow-on products, often at much higher margins. This is the core of the scale of Pervasive opportunity in the Industrial venue, especially the application services (see exhibit “Pervasive Internet Industrial Opportunity in 2008”).

As OEMs pursue services, the need to automate the highly manual processes related to service delivery becomes a major incentive to use a much broader array of networked devices. Today, the gathering and dissemination of data from distributed assets tends to be a manual, labor-intensive process. This process will become much more refined when any device or asset, regardless of physical position, is as close as a URL away.

Factors Influencing Adoption
Harbor finds that the most important factors influencing Industrial adoption are much the same as they are in other venues, but often more intense. The folks in this community are very particular and risk-averse. The message to pervasive technologists is “don’t tread lightly.”

The requirements for successful Pervasive Internet adoption in the Industrial venue include many of the required items in other venues:

  • Convergence and coordination of existing technologies—such as the interplay between industrial Ethernet and wireless sensor networks.

  • The need for supplier ecosystems that can truly deliver the whole system (a quantum more complex than in other venues).

  • Sensitivity to the fact that Industrial users need help relating the technology value propositions to real-world business cases.

Industrial Is in the Early Stages of Rapid Adoption
Based on interactions with suppliers and adopters in the Industrial market, Harbor believes this venue is in the early stages of rapid adoption of device networking solutions. Industrial customers increasingly associate device networking with lower costs and improved customer service.

Consequently, more are expressing an explicit willingness to adopt M2M solutions, particularly in the infrastructure, machine and process control segments, as well as in industrial supply chains (see exhibit “Industrial Device Waves of Adoption”).

Pervasive Internet Study
