Why Currents?
Our title means many things
Invisible forces running through water. Electricity running through wires. The many wireless signals in the air all around us. And all the things (“current events”) that are happening right now.

“Currents” was also the title of a publication series we did some years ago. There was no Web when we started it. Very few of our subscribers even had email. Today we have better ways to share our thoughts and news. But in casting about for a newsletter title, nothing sounded better than our own legacy, so “Currents” is back.

And there’s one other reason: Mark Twain.

The passenger who could not read it was charmed with a peculiar sort of faint dimple on [the river’s] surface, but to the pilot that was an italicized passage ... for it meant that a wreck or rock was buried there that could tear the life out of the strongest vessel that ever floated. In truth, the passengers who could not read this book saw nothing but pretty pictures in it, whereas to the trained eye these were not pictures at all, but the most earnest of reading matter.

Think Pervasive

The Web Is Not The Internet

It’s easy to forget that the World Wide Web and the Internet are not the same thing. The Web is a set of protocols and human-oriented presentation technologies built on the networking standards of the Internet. Thus, the phenomenon of the Web is both a helpful and a deceptive proxy for the new world represented by the Pervasive Internet.

The Web Was Designed for People, Not for Embedded Devices
In less than a decade, the World Wide Web has changed communications forever by providing a human-oriented interface to a global data network, and in turn provoking the exponential growth of that network—the Internet.

But it’s important to remember that the Web and the Internet are not the same phenomenon. The Web is a people thing. Technologically, it was not designed for embedded machine-to-machine communication and control; on some levels, its protocols can be extended for this purpose; on other levels that would be a mistake. Socially and commercially, some aspects of the Web phenomenon will apply to networked pervasive computing—the Pervasive Internet—and some won’t.

As we think about the revolutionary business automation driven by global device-networking on the Internet, it’s vital that we recognize where the human-oriented Web can provide valuable directions and analogies, and where it can lead us astray.

How the Pervasive Internet is Like the Web
As business phenomena, machine-to-machine (M2M) networking and the Pervasive Internet are like the Web in these ways:

  • Great volatility and many unknowns. When the Web came along, it was terra incognita, and the only thing known for sure about it was that its potential was huge and the business stakes high. Because adoption of the Pervasive Internet has been somewhat slower, perhaps companies understand a bit more than this as they move forward, but there is still large potential for gain and loss, and many factors that aren’t well understood.

  • Moving early is very important. It’s possible to achieve real dominance by moving early, and to be left outside by delaying.

  • Many of the same marketing methods are valid. The Web gave us viral marketing, and this will still be a powerful marketing concept within the M2M universe. And because some M2M applications will have human interfaces, and many of these will be Web-based, Web marketing techniques are highly valid, at least for these applications.

  • Partnerships are very important. The business development function will be key. Personnel will be specialized in finding and evaluating potential partners, and cultivating them into actual ecosystem participants.

  • Portals will be important. Portals (which always included search functions) were the first killer apps of the Web. They will not be first in M2M, but they will be important.

  • Products will be applications. Network-enabled products and services are applications, in exactly the way that IT has always used the term.

How the Pervasive Internet is Not Like the Web
Despite the similarities noted above, the Pervasive Internet is not like the Web in these ways:

  • None of the above is true in every market. Few will make the mistake of seeing it as an enormous homogeneous whole. Part of the dot-com bubble came about because of the perceived possibility, for some companies, of dominating the whole Web. On the Pervasive Internet, applications will be discrete enough that it will be hard to dream of owning the whole world.

  • Despite the word “pervasive,” parts of the Pervasive Internet will remain quite separate from other parts. A tricky piece that won’t be decided until later is where portals should exist between applications and application suites on the Pervasive Internet. For the most part, applications will start out being quite separate from the rest of the M2M world. Yet value will be added by breaching some of the barriers, but which barriers, and when, and how, are all questions that will be answered piecemeal.

  • Portals won’t be the same animals as on the Web. We’ve said that portals will be important. But they’ll be different, at least some of them. Instead of being places for people to come to find the Internet, they will be highly privileged places where the M2M Internet breaks out from “underground” to meet with people or with artificially intelligent systems. The word “privileged” is important here. Just as with the Web, every player will hope for an opportunity to meet with human eyeballs. Yet, far more than is the case on the Web, opportunities to do so will be rare and will be bought at the cost of enormous cleverness and the creation of unique value propositions.

Strategic planning for the Pervasive Internet is and will remain an interesting animal. For most players, M2M planning will be like much high-tech strategy, in which down-in-the-weeds technology considerations will have to be made side-by-side with the broadest corporate “vision things.”

Finally, just as the Pervasive Internet will rock companies, it will rock individual careers. Many individuals will be unable to adjust to the required new ways of thinking, and very few will be able to get their mental arms around the full complexity of it. Thus an important consideration in strategizing is whom to invite to the table. A breadth of points of view will be necessary to achieve a complete vision, and it will be a serious challenge not to let the diversity of viewpoints result in paralysis by analysis, or a protocol of excessively polite listening.
